Season’s greetings

Welcome to December. This is the busiest time of year for most people, but I hope you are finding time to be with friends and family. They make all the difference.

If entertaining is part of your family tradition, in this issue’s cover story you’ll find several delicious recipes—from savoury to sweet, all from Costco members—to delight your guests. Costco warehouses and Costco.ca carry a wide range of quality ingredients to help you prepare these and many other holiday dishes. In our For Your Table section, you will find more celebration ideas, such as edible centrepieces, mocktails, gluten-free baking and no-bake desserts, for the upcoming festivities.

Our buying teams are always developing new items and collaborating with suppliers—often

a year or more in advance—to bring you the right mix of products. As a result, you can find sought-after, branded merchandise in our warehouses and at Costco.ca at a great savings.

Read the stories in this issue’s For Your Entertainment Special Section for great gift ideas.

If the holidays have you thinking about getting away, this issue’s Travel Connection focuses on various types of activities in Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean. A little sun in a relaxing place with the right people can work wonders after a hectic season.

No matter how busy the season might be, I hope Costco can help you make the most of your time with loved ones.

Behind the scenes

The September [2024] issue of your Costco Connection, specifically the “Showtime-ready” article, really did provide an after-hours and behind-the-scenes overview of Costco! A fascinating read in logistics and over-all teamwork.

Wise investments

I just read your article “Surprise expenses” [August 2024] in Costco Connection magazine. Investment savings accounts through TD Direct Investing seem to pay higher interest rates than high-interest savings accounts through TD Bank. They are available in US dollars and Canadian dollars and are also protected under CDIC insurance. Why do you not recommend these to clients as well?

Arlene Egan, via email

Editor’s note:

We asked Chris White from Canadian MoneySaver about this, and he said that both investment savings accounts and high-interest savings accounts can be effective tools for building an emergency fund.

Busy bees

I may be wrong, but I have never seen a story on the busiest [Costco warehouse] in Canada or North America. I started going to Costco

as a loyal member as soon as you opened in Barrie, Ontario. Since then I have made a practice of going to a Costco in every city that

I visit. I have been to warehouses in France, the UK, Mexico and every state that I visit. The products carried all have a regional flair [especially] in clothing and food. Sample a beer in Montreal next

to the high-end bakery! And buying alcohol at reasonable prices

is also fun.

P.S. My daughter lives walking distance to a Costco in Anchorage, Alaska, and if grandpa goes missing he is probably in the Food

Court.

Editor’s note:

The top three Canadian warehouses

in terms of gross sales are:

1. Laval, Quebec

2. Kelowna, British Columbia

3. Southwest Calgary, Alberta

Nutritional information

I really enjoy the articles and recipes that you have in your magazines. However, I find it odd that you don’t provide the nutritional values. Is there a reason you don’t? Are you considering providing this information at some point in the near future?

Editor’s note:

The Connection is unable to provide nutritional information for recipes due to limited space. Many of the recipe developers we work with list nutritional information on their websites, so you may want to visit them for more information.

PARTY PREPAREDNESS

Gifts for the host

Don’t want to show up to the party empty-handed? Here are tips for selecting a thank-you gift for the host. Cater to their interests. Novelty snacks, a favourite beverage or chocolates are good choices for foodies. Home cooks will enjoy a spice blend or quality olive oil. For self-care enthusiasts, select a scented candle or a fresh bouquet of flowers. Whatever gift you choose, your host will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Emerald City exploration

Costco member Judy Dumanski of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, recently visited Pike Place Market in Seattle. “It’s a big tourist attraction with hundreds of local goods to purchase, which makes it a fun place to visit,” Dumanski says. “We usually use Costco Travel to book a car rental.

We always get great service.”

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Accommodating dietary restrictions when you’re hosting

Having friends or family over for a meal?

Ask your guests if they have dietary restrictions or allergies and make sure there’s at least one dish everyone can enjoy.

Familiarize yourself with your guests’ specific restrictions. Vegans don’t eat animal products or by-products, including cheese and honey, while vegetarians avoid meat but still consume dairy products and other animal by-products. Pescatarians don’t eat meat, but do eat fish. People who are lactose intolerant often choose to avoid eating food that contains dairy.

Ask guests with allergies how they handle food preparation. People who are gluten intolerant are usually fine with simply not eating gluten, but people with celiac disease need to use separate utensils and cutting boards to avoid cross-contamination.
