A fresh start

While any day of the year is a good time to begin making positive changes, January 1 is historically the time for new resolutions, fresh starts, clean slates and newly discovered (or rediscovered) desires for bettering yourself.

As such, it’s practically required that publications participate in this annual cycle of rebirth, with articles and tips for developing healthy habits. The Connection is no exception, with the added benefit that, in addition to offering advice from experts,we can point you to a variety of products in Costco warehouses and at Costco.ca that can help you achieve your goals. Whether you

are setting financial goals, introducing or increasing exercise, or seeking an improved diet, you’ll find information on these topics and more, including our cover story with fitness tips from athletes and the For Your Health Special Section.

Rounding out this seasonal focus are some delicious recipes and food ideas, including ways to practice mindful eating and adding plant-based meals to your diet.

Plus, the For Your Home section includes an article on Costco supplier Flexsteel, which has been designing and making furniture since 1893. We also share some great Costco buyers’ furniture picks for setting up a nursery and adding style to your home.

However you choose to celebrate the dawn of a new year, we at Costco and at the Connection wish you success in your endeavours this month and in the months and years to come. Happy New Year!

Fall break

Our family is on fall break in Calgary. We made it a point to stop by a Costco warehouse and brought along our Costco Connection magazine! Woo-hoo! We [love] Costco.

Too sweet

[In “Something sweet,” October 2024,] sorry, but you lost me just after the line “Reinvent leftover candy by turning it into tasty jewellery.” There is no such thing as leftover candy in my house!

Chuck Dorband, via email

Bug’s life

I was shocked to see you promoting removal of fallen leaves before the first snowfall, on page 12 [“Plan a lush lawn,” October 2024]. Environmental groups highly recommend leaving them on the ground until spring and [when] the temperature is consistently above 10 C [50 F]. So many beneficial insects use the leaf litter as a home over the winter. It would be nice to have this emphasized by entities with influence such as Costco. Everyone needs to do all they can to help the environment, and this is sucha simple thing. All it takes is education to change our current viewpoint.

Alisa Carnall, Fredericton, New Brunswick

Kirkland Signature

I have been a Costco member since August 1992. My question is, how and why did Costco come to name their house brand Kirkland [Signature™]?

P. Moran, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Editor’s note:

The private-label name came from the city where Costco was originally

headquartered: Kirkland, Washington.

Grateful

I am writing this email just to deliver my gratitude. I like your articles and really learn so many interesting things from your magazine. Huge thanks for the great work that you do.

EDS

Thank you for the article [“Bending the rules,” October 2024] on EDS [Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome]. Our family, all bendy, never knew why some of us dislocate a shoulder or knee so easily until my daughter was diagnosed after she was rear-ended at high speed. She just couldn’t recover from neck and shoulder issues. It is great to make people more aware of this condition.

Carol Prinz, via email

What a surprise to find an article about EDS! It’s so hard to explain to others what EDS is and what it’s like living with it. Though, as your article said, EDS has a spectrum, Ms. Duda did a fairly good job explaining it. I’m going to save the “What you see/What you don’t see” picture. Thank you for featuring this genetic disorder that is often not diagnosed until late in life. I was 60 and only diagnosed after multiple dislocations. I hope it helps someone discover that they have it so they can do the things suggested to help with their quality of life.

Suzanne Farris, via email
