Finding your power

Mel Robbins explores

the idea of letting others

live their lives

Mel Robbins is a New York Times best-selling author whose books have been translated into 41 languages. The Mel Robbins Podcast reaches listeners in 194 countries daily. She was recently named one of Forbes’ 50 Over 50.

Robbins is known for relatable advice and science-backed tools that have changed the lives of millions of people worldwide. Over the years she’s written books about how to build motivation and confidence. In her latest book, The Let Them Theory, Robbins tackles a new

topic: relationships.

Speaking from her home in Vermont, Costco member Robbins says that the

concept of Let Them crystallized in a situation where she was micromanaging her 18-year-old son and his friends, and her effort to control them was backfiring.

The Let Them Theory (Item 1885238) will be available

in January in most Costco warehouses.

A light bulb went on. “It struck me: Why am I worrying about this? Let them …” Robbins recalls. “After that, whenever I became frustrated about someone else’s behaviour, I said to myself, ‘Let them.’ Immediately I could feel myself soften. I felt better.”

She goes on, “The Let Them Theory is based on a simple idea: The more you let other people live their lives, the better your life and your relationships will be. When you say ‘let them’ you set yourself free from the opinions, drama and judgments of others. Free from the exhausting cycle of trying to manage everything and everyone around you.”

And so, the “Let Them” theory was born, first as a 60-second video that went viral with 15 million views in 24 hours. That response led Robbins to expand it to book form.

Robbins is quick to point out that “Let Them” is only the first step. “Just as important is ‘Let Me.’ This is how you redirect your energy to what you can control. You determine your own response

and find the power to reclaim your life.”

As evidence that “Let Them” resonates profoundly with readers, Robbins has received photos from over 100 people who have had the phrase tattooed on their bodies. (See the book for a sampling!)

“I want my books and podcasts to appeal to everyone. I want them to feel that a friend is talking directly to them, discussing information and ideas.”

Millions of readers and listeners do, helped every day by the plain-spoken wisdom of someone who has lived, struggled, learned and shared.

Ellen Schwartz lives in Burnaby, British Columbia, and is the author of 19 books.
